The 3 Principles Global Community is pleased to announce

An Exploration of Sydney Banks Books

Reading for Depth

The mission of 3pgc is to spread the inspired and hopeful message and works of Sydney Banks throughout the world. One impactful way of doing that is for people who were personally mentored by Syd for decades to lead us as we reflect on each of Syd’s six published books. Please join us for this immersion into Syd’s simple, powerful discoveries, to see more and more clearly how lives are transformed by awakening to the universal wisdom and innate spiritual well-being within all people.

Sydney Banks’ six books, written between 1983 and 2005, were the primary resources available to the original group of people who were inspired to try to take this revolutionary understanding of mental health to the world. When the first book, Second Chance, was written, it was the only real resource the small group of early students of Syd had, and we all pored over it, looking to see beyond our first inklings that we were engaged in something that we barely understood, but we were certain would change psychology and psychiatry. For three decades, Syd was the teacher the original practitioners depended on, and his books and tapes are, and will forever be, the primary source of this understanding.

As the ever-increasing number of proponents of the Principles as a true understanding of innate mental wellbeing continued to learn and grow, Syd wrote books that pushed us along in our journey, seeing our blind spots and continually urging us to quiet down, listen and reflect more, and look more deeply into the spiritual nature of the Principles.

Some of the remaining original students of Syd want to share in-depth reading of these books with the world, to point to the profound and lasting contribution they are to the global realization of the Three Principles.

Meeting 2 (September 20th): Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7
Meeting 3 (September 27th): Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Second Chance, published in 1983 — This is the first book of Sydney Banks.
This book is the basic primer on the Principles. For several years, except for a few scratchy audiotapes from the early days in SaltSpring, it was all we had directly from Syd. For many clients who read it, it was life-changing.
Please watch  “The Experience” before reading the book.

Mark Howard & Shane Kennedy
Meeting 1 (October 4th): Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Meeting 2 (October 11th): Chapters 6, 7. 8, 9

In Quest of the Pearl, published in 1989 — sequel to Second Chance.
At the time this book was written, Syd discovered that we were talking a lot about thought, but bypassing the spiritual nature of the Principles. He saw that we had not ourselves reflected deeply enough to talk comfortably about the spiritual, and that we were “stuck” talking about Thought and Consciousness as they manifest, not talking about Thought and Consciousness as Principles, as POWER to create our life. So this is the next level of depth to which he wanted us to go, represented by the meetings with Mama Lila. This is a very profound book.

Linda & George Pransky
Meeting 1 (October 18th): First three chapters, pp. 1-36
Meeting 2 (October 25th): Next five chapters, pp. 37-96
Meeting 3 (November 1st): Last chapters, 97-142

The Missing Link, published in 1998. Syd’s only non-fiction book, purely about the meaning of the Principles.
This book was written as Syd became aware of some of the things that practitioners were writing and saying, and once more, felt we were making the work complicated, missing the deepest spiritual meaning, and “teaching” rather than eliciting and helping to reveal truth. It is a favorite of both practitioners and clients and one of the most often read of Syd’s books. It is disarmingly simple. People tend to breeze through it, rather than stopping to truly reflect on the depth and significance of every passage.

Chip & Jan Chipman
Meeting 1 (November 8th): First 5 Chapters, pp. 5-51
Meeting 2 (November 15th): Next 5 Chapters, pp. 54-81
Meeting 3 (November 22nd): Next 5 Chapters, pp. 82-133
Meeting 4 (November 29th): Final Chapters, pp. 132-175

The Enlightened Gardner, published in 2001, Syd’s demonstration of how to distinguish the 3P from traditional psychology.
This book is the first novel Syd wrote with several highly educated characters representing different points of view, playing off of a simple person with no education, representing pure wisdom. It offers all of us a true example of dealing with confusion and opposition without losing the feeling, and saying the same simple truth many different ways with no investment in what others are “getting,” knowing that truth always breaks through eventually.

Dicken Bettinger & Rita Shuford
Meeting 1 (December 6th): Chapters 1-7, pp. 5-62
Meeting 2 (December 13th): Chapters 8, 9

Dear Liza, published in 2004, a simple story of hope and change arising from the feeling.
As much as Syd wanted us to “listen for the feeling” and work from a feeling, and trust deeper feelings, it was often a struggle for people to get out of their intellect and experience the simplicity of this work when it comes from our own grounding. Syd wrote this sweet little story of the effect encountering a street urchin had on a wealthy family to illustrate that point. It is much deeper than it seems. Take it slow. Spend time on the letters from Liza’s mother, pp. 67-73. They lead to very rich discussion and are the centerpiece of the “training” Liza had.

Judy Sedgeman & Bill Pettit
Meeting 1 (January 3rd): pp. 5-45
Meeting 2 (January 10th): pp. 46-79
Meeting 3 (January 17th): pp. 80-127
Meeting 4 (January 24th): pp. 128-168

The Enlightened Gardener Revisited, published in 2005, the sequel to The Enlightened Gardener, in which the two psychologists most deeply affected in the first book return to take their understanding even deeper.
This is Syd’s last book, published four years before he died. It is truly rich with all the depth Syd could share. It is worth savoring and reflecting on, just as the two psychologists did as they spent time with Andy the Gardner. People often speed-read it for the story, thinking they “already read The Enlightened Gardener” so they “got” the philosophy. Not so.

Our Vision

3PGC has always been here to support practitioners, and as each of us lives more deeply grounded, healthier lives, we’re able to better serve our clients. Now, we’re inspired to expand that impact globally, and you’re joining us in spreading the message of well-being, as discovered by Sydney Banks, throughout the world. We come together as eternal students. As we drop into the feeling, our personal minds melt away, senses invigorated with a deeper connection to Mind and others.
